To many people, Glenn Miller's music is forever connected with a time and outlook in a way that few of his contemporaries can claim. While many of his songs are classics, with "In the Mood Miller gave the Swing Era its defining moment. With the possible exception of "Sing, Sing, Sing it's the one big band song that everyone seems to know, and generally it's only Miller's original version that gets wide circulation. Glenn Miller is arguably the best-known bandleader of the Big Band Era. His 'Moonlight Serenade' and 'In the Mood' pieces are iconic symbols of those long-ago days. During World War II, Miller enlisted in the Army Air Force. Beginning in mid-1944, he toured dozens of bases in England, entertaining the troops with his newly-created 'super band,' a 62-man orchestra variously known as the the USAAF Orchestra, the American Band of the AEF and the American Band of the Supreme Allied Command. GLENN MILLER IN BRITAIN THEN AND NOW, written by Chris Way and published by After the Battle Publishing in 1996, is the record of Miller's wartime service in England.

After a short introduction to the band's creation, Way presents a location-by-location summary of the performances given by Miller & Co. Along with describing each base or facility, Way briefly details the concert given often including human interest stories. Dozens of vintage maps and well-captioned photographs of Miller, his band, concert sites and concerts in full swing are featured along with contemporary pix of what the sites looked like in 1996. The photographs, especially the candid shots, show us not just a great musician but also a warm, personable individual. They remind us of what a great talent Miller was and how much was lost with his death. The book concludes with chapters on Miller's loss on a flight to France on 15 December 1944, films starring or about Miller and the various 'Glenn Miller Bands' that have continued Miller's musical tradition over the years.'

In short, GLENN MILLER IN BRITAIN THEN AND NOW is an informative summary of Miller's wartime service and a touching tribute to that great musician. Highly recommended.

Just received the book on the 17th of August from the mail. I have browsed through the pages and am very impressed with the history and photography on Glenn Miller!! Its in perfect shape as advertised!! I have 26 books of the "Then and Now" series!! Each book is well researched in this series that makes them (each) a collector item!! They are ,to me, a time capsule of a by-gone-area, preserved with excellent binding and the pages being plastic coated!! Each book is made to last a long time!! Kudos on everyone who produced these individual books of the "Then and Now" series!!
