City Comforts: How to Bu. .has been added to your Cart. Yes, Sucher could have built in references to foundational work such as Jane Jacobs, Chris Alexander, Kevin Lynch. The book is collection of thoughts and ideas on how to design a livable, people-oriented city. One other thing that I liked about City Comforts was that the book explained every architectural and planning related detail in simple terms. Even someone with no experience with either of these subjects (like me) could understand this text. Since Sucher's ideas have the potential to be very beneficial (in my opinion), I would recommend this book to anyone involved with city planning or architecture. However, anyone can enjoy City Comforts.
City Comforts is a great book if you want good pictures and implementable physical changes that actually make a difference. It does not go to into a lot of theory, but has many nice pictures and fun anecdotes. Still, it’s an interesting read if you want ideas that can transform any mediocre streetscape or public realm into a much more enjoyable and lively locale . David Sucher provides a guide for how designers and citizens can create an "urban village". What is an "urban village"? Sucher describes it as a city that gives us the intimacy and connection of a village, but with the scale and anonymity of a large city.
