Castles first appeared in Britain during the 11th century during the Norman Conquest and continued to be constructed well into the 18th century, although the later castles were built more for show than for fortification. Today, there are hundreds of castles in England in various stages of restoration or states of decay. Many have become popular tourist destinations, offering visitors the chance to see how life in a real castle compares with storybook tales of towers, turrets and untold treasure.
Best British Castles: see a listing of the best castles in Britain including Windsor Castle, Leeds Castle, Edinburgh Castle and Kenilworth Castle. While few Englishmen, or indeed Scotsmen, could ever afford to live in a real castle, the isles of Britain are still dotted with hundreds of these impressive structures, many of which make for a great day out. The ancient castles that are scattered across the length and breadth of Britain are testaments to the country's colourful past. Some have crumbled in time, leaving ruins ready to be explored. Others dominate the skyline as proudly as when they were first built.

Here is our selection of Britain’s greatest castles. Above: The Tower of London. The beautiful, medieval Arundel Castle is set in West Sussex and was founded by Roger de Montgomery on Christmas Day 1067. It was damaged in the English Civil War but was respectfully restored in the 18th and 19th centuries. Consequently, it has been open to visitors seasonally for nearly 200 years and is considered to be one of the great treasure houses of England, having its own unique place in history. During the Wars of the Roses,it was one of three castles held by Lancastrian forces in 1461 and 1462 but today, the current Duke of Northumberland and his family live within its walls. After Windsor Castle, it is the second largest inhabited castle in England, and has earned further fame recently, featuring as ‘Hogwarts’ in the first two Harry Potter movies.
